The Nutcracker
For years, we have seen "Primary Nutcracker" on the school calendar and thought "how nice that the school takes the kids to see 'The Nutcracker'" ...until we got an email saying how to do their hair and what kind of shoes to send them in for their parts. The kids were *performing* The Nutcracker! After seeing a YouTube video of the ballet, Raleigh told us constantly "I can't wait to show you the real Nutcracker." Tonight was finally the night, and it was amazing! The kids marched and twirled their little hearts out!
August was mesmerized. ...for the first 10 minutes, but by then, Raleigh and the other soldiers had scared away the mice so we could wander around in the back a little.

Raleigh's New Favorite Toy
Just as a preface, our kids do have toys, but we buy them a birthday present or a Christmas gift, not a new chest of toys for every special occasion. Before Raleigh was born, as we sat in a friend's house that was overrun by toys, Erik joked that our kids won't have toys, "they could just play with their imaginations." :)
Now that Raleigh is three and started preschool, we decided that he can choose his own toys and learn a little about money. So, we started giving him a (very small) allowance and explained to him that he could use the money for buying toys or treats or save it for later to get something bigger. From then on, whenever he'd see a toy in a store and wanted it, we'd tell him he could use his money to buy it if he wanted. Yesterday was one such day. As we were standing in line to buy him a new coat, he saw a toy he wanted, but, of course, he didn't have his money. "Well, maybe next time we're here..." Then today, we were going to buy gloves since we didn't find any yesterday. Raleigh asked if the "glove store" was close to the "coat store". They were. So, he told us that he wanted to bring his money to buy the toy he saw yesterday. After buying the gloves, we walked to the "coat store" (where the toy was) and the line to check out was a mile long. We explained about how we'd have to wait for everybody else first and that it would take a very long time. We even told him we could come back after lunch or even order it online so it could be delivered to our house. Raleigh ignored our pleas; he was determined. He waited patiently in line for HALF AN HOUR so he could buy the toy. And what was it? Wooden traffic signs. Go figure!
Raleigh held the wooden signs in the car, played with them in the restaurant during lunch, wanted to take them to a birthday party so the birthday child could play with them too (we forgot them in the car), and took them with him to another friend's house. Not only can these signs be signs, but also blocks, puzzles, spinning toys... During one car ride, as Raleigh was getting close to nodding off, he asked that we make sure his signs didn't fall down. As we were leaving the friend's house, Raleigh made sure we didn't forget his signs. I think Raleigh will take good care of this toy.

Happy Birthday August!
Our sweet baby boy turned one year old today. To celebrate, we took a family vacation to New Orleans for a long weekend and got back last night. We had cake today after dinner.
We gave him a bite of the whole cake, hence the chocolate frosting mustache, but he wasn't interested in eating the cake.
Enter big brother, to show him how it's done.
...and this is how we eat cake.
Take 2 (we thought maybe if he sees the inside of the cake, he'd be more interested).
A small bite.
Maybe Raleigh should try some...
Hmmm... Should I eat the rest or throw it on the floor?
Throw it on the floor.
Maybe mommy doesn't make very good cake. ...or maybe he was full from eating so much dinner (chicken, rice and broccoli).

Walking and Talking
August added "up" and "uh-oh" to his list of words. He's been saying mama, dada and RaRa for a while--we don't know when they became official words because they gradually gained meaning. He's also been taking a few steps.
Here he is enjoying spaghetti.
He's catching up to brother--and brother's narrowing the gap by pretending to be a baby.

Preschool
Yesterday was Raleigh's first day of "Primary". (Primary is preschool and kindergarten). He gets to play on a bigger playground, take naps on cots and go on FIELD TRIPS!!!! Sunday night, he ran out of his room at bedtime to tell mommy "I'm so excited to ride on the school bus!"
He will have a very busy schedule as a preschooler--karate on Mondays, field trips on Tuesdays, tennis on Wednesdays, bowling on Thursdays and "water day" on Fridays. He will learn about bugs, animals, the ocean and have lots of time for art and just playing with friends! ;)
Mom and dad are looking forward to all the new stories he will bring home!

August
He already had our hearts
Now he has our keys and wallets!
Today Raleigh called August "best friend" then said "August is my best friend"--(maybe we should record it for when they are older!). If August could talk, I'm sure he'd say the same about his big brother. August can spend all day watching his brother and laughing at him, despite all the pokes, jabs and bumps.

6 Months Old!
So, this is from the end of February - having some trouble with the BlogPress App.
August is 1/2 already! We went to the doctor, and he's still long and lean and has a big head. :) He is sitting, laughing a lot, babbling a lot, and seems to really love big brother, despite all the bumps, squeezes and tugs he receives from him. August laughs at Raleigh's antics A LOT, which is unfortunate because it only encourages them. August is GREAT at falling asleep in his bed. Even daycare reported that when he's tired, he doesn't want rocking or anything, he just wants to be put in his crib. Then he squirms a little until he finds the right position, and he's out. Staying asleep at night leaves a little to be desired - he did much better before mommy went back to work, but for now, we enjoy extra hugs and cuddles in the middle of the night.
Despite it being Little Brother's (half-) birthday, Big Brother had the great idea that we could pretend that today is Raleigh's birthday. He mainly wanted cake. But, he has been doing such a great job listening and helping us, that we decided he deserves a special day. ...and because we had an angel food cake mix and only had to add water. Raleigh was very eager to help. As mommy was getting out bowls and pans, Raleigh got water in a cup from the refrigerator and poured it in the bowl. When I told him we needed to measure it first, he was eager to get a ruler. When we finally opened the box, he was pretty disappointed that it was "just sugar"--it looked nothing like the picture. He was pretty content with the cake and didn't ask for presents.

First Day
Augie started daycare today.
There are just two babies today, so he will get a lot of time with his new teacher.
We also had his 4 month appointment yesterday. August is long and lean--he weighs 14lb 7oz and is 25.5" long. He also accomplished something Raleigh never did--he is in the 100th percentile for head circumference! Good thing big brother's head is stretching out the necks of his shirts for him!!! ;)
